Key Speaker at the Management in Practice Event
Wednesday 8 October
Kavita Oberoi's presentation, titled "Maximising income streams in general practice", was held up as a highlight of the 'Management in Practice' conference.
As the founder and managing director of Oberoi Consulting, a key IT solutions provider to primary care, Kavita has gained a tremendous insight into how practices can improve their income through service redesign and improving Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) scores, and she shared her experience with the delegates.
Kavita discussed the merits of business planning in general practice using a case study approach, and examined the relationship between reported disease prevalence, QOF income and patient care. She also covered the importance of accurate data collection, clinical performance and the value of a QOF point. Her session concluded with an overview of enhanced services, PBC, and private work and practice accounting.
She explained how Read Code errors and flawed registers mean practices can lose out on QOF points.
As a real-life example, she recounted the case of a surgery that had not allocated correct Read Codes to 89 patients on their list. In just one day, an examination of the data uncovered 30 patients who had not been added to disease prevalence figures.
As she explained, practices can miss out on rewards for work that they're already doing.

Kavita Oberoi speaks at Dispensing Doctor Association Conference
December 2006
Kavita Oberoi, of Oberoi Consulting pointed out that practices ‘lose a lot of money through inappropriate coding’. Practice managers’ ears pricked up at this statement and a number of GPs said they were surprised to hear about ‘quiet’ changes to Read Codes that could lead to lost QoF points.
To minimise inappropriate coding, which can lead to patients not appearing on disease registers, Kavita urged delegates to always use a diagnosis code and to identify and avoid hidden codes; which are generally those starting with a ‘history of’.
To keep abreast of personal, local and national prescribing patterns, Kavita urged delegates to visit www.gpcontract.co.uk/; a website giving published QoF achievement data for every practice in the UK.
Her lively presentation challenged many previously held assumptions.
